Winter

The winter distribution season consists of four monthly deliveries. On the second Saturday of December, January, February and March, we bring Windflower Farm’s winter greens and stored vegetables, along with their neighbors’ fruits and cider, to our shareholders in New York City. Ted and Jan use unheated structures because the use of heating fuel would be both wasteful and prohibitively expensive. Although sunlight is in short supply during the winter, they have opted not to add supplemental light, as this, too, would be unnecessarily energy-intensive and costly. Instead they plant the greens early (selecting cold-hardy varieties), they use the warmth and light of Fall to grow them, and, for safekeeping until harvest time, they placed them under two layers of protective row covers. This means that there is a risk that your share of greens will not be particularly bountiful. But know too, that your onions, potatoes, root crops, squashes, fruits and other storage crops are already safely tucked away.
